Microsoft on Tuesday updated Office for Mac 2011, the long-in-the-tooth productivity suite tailored to machines running Apple's OS X, with bug fixes, features and compatibility with the Office 365 subscription service.

The latest Office for Mac 2011 version 14.3.4 includes a variety of feature additions that brings the application suite somewhat up to spec with its Windows counterpart, and includes bug fixes for compatibility issues that hindered interoperability between PC and Mac versions of Word, Outlook and other titles.

Perhaps most important is the ability for existing Office for Mac 2011 users to integrate with Office 365, a subscription service that offers users access to the latest Office software updates, as well as SkyDrive cloud storage and SharePoint access for Word.
Fixes included in the new version:
Microsoft Office Mac 2011 Upgrades
  • Coauthoring session with Microsoft PowerPoint Web App and Microsoft PowerPoint for Mac
  • After token expires, does not prompt for credentials in Microsoft Outlook for Mac
  • Calibri Light font not included in Office for Mac
  • SetupUI is shown to user on start after Office for Mac is already activated
  • Saving files to SkyDrive and SharePoint in Microsoft Word for Mac
  • Folder contains excess white space: Error 1025 in Outlook for Mac
  • XLIST command that is used by Gmail is deprecated in Outlook for Mac
  • Local group mail cannot be sent in Outlook for Mac
  • Remote devices lose control while in Presentation Mode in Microsoft PowerPoint for Mac
  • File format extension support in PowerPoint for Mac
  • Searching continues after user cancels in Outlook for Mac
  • Items go into Junk Mail in Outlook for Mac
  • Blocked Senders List under Junk Email Protection in Outlook for Mac

In a recent change to its pricing policies, Microsoft placed Office 2011 for Mac in the same tier as its more current PC counterpart Office 2013 for Windows. At the time, it was thought that the Redmond, Wash., company was pushing Mac users toward an Office 365 subscription due to the deprecation of multi-license bundles.
With Tuesday's update, Office 2011 users can sign up for Microsoft Office 365 if they so choose. Subscription to the Home Premium edition costs $99.99 per year, or $9.99 per month, and grants the use of Office on up to five computers.
In order to take advantage of the newest Office for Mac 2011 version, existing owners must have version 14.1.0 or higher installed on a machine running OS X 10.5.8 or later, while Office 365 requires an Intel Mac and OS X 10.6 or higher. The download is available through Auto Update or Microsoft's website.-->

Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error. I have Microsoft word/office on Mac, but not the Mac version. I recently updated it to the newest version and when I went to open any documents, email attachments or tried to save a new document, a popup would come up with 'Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission. Apr 16, 2018  Open the Preferences folder and drag com.microsoft.Word.plist to the desktop. If you can't find the file, continue to the next step. Now, open the Microsoft folder (in Preferences), and drag com.microsoft.Word.prefs.plist to the desktop. Note If you have Service Pack 2 installed, open Application Support Microsoft instead of Preferences Microsoft. Apr 02, 2018  1) User launches Microsoft Word with no issues. All Office apps launch fine, including opening existing documents, just cannot save them. 2) User creates a new blank document with no issues. Same issue occurs if user attempts to open an existing word doc, make changes, and then save. The true problem is that word for mac (and Windows) saves in the.docx file format and word can no longer find that folder. For some reason Apple iCloud has taken the folder so that it can not be seen by word.Go to Finder and locate and then drag the 'documents' folder back up to the top of the list of finder folders. That should do it.It did for me. The error message ‘ Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error ’ occurs while saving files in Microsoft Word. This error message can occur randomly as well as in targeted cases. This scenario is most common where the file came from an. Microsoft word mac files not saving because of permission form.

Apple has long encouraged application developers to adopt the 64-bit runtime environment, and we've been hearing from customers that 64-bit versions of Office for Mac are desirable to enable larger address spaces, better performance, and new innovative features. All releases of Office for Mac after August 22, 2016 are 64-bit only.

What does this change mean for me?

Update Upgrade

  • If you use Office for Mac but don't use any add-ins, you should be unaffected by this change.

  • If you use or develop add-ins in Office for Mac, you may need to update those add-ins to 64-bit.

I develop add-ins or write VBA for Office for Mac. What do I need to know?

  • The primary impact of this change is to compiled add-ins. Office add-ins (add-ins using the JavaScript-based APIs) are not impacted by this change.

  • The work required to update your add-ins for 64-bit will vary based on the code.

  • For example, any use of VBA's DECLARE statement to load external functions in compiled dynamic libraries will require that those libraries support 64-bit. The VBA code itself will continue to work as VBA is transitioned to 64-bit, but you'll need to update the external libraries.
